Scotland Street is located on a busy, bohemian corner of Edinburgh's New Town, where the old upper class sees itself rubbing shoulders with the students, poets and artists. And number 44 has more than its fair share of the streets quirks and failures. When Pat's on her second gap year and a source of concern for her parents- is accepted as a new tenant at number 44 she isn't sure how long she will stay. Her roommate Bruce, chartered surveyor, rugby player who is infuriatingly good-looking, carelessly philandering and impossibly narcissistic. Downstairs, lives pretentious Irene, whose five-year old son is in therapy after setting fire to a copy of his father's of the Guardian. And then there is the smart, intellectual Domenica MacDonald mysteriously employed with a keen observer on the eyes of the houses activities in her spare time.
